5 questions you've always wanted to ask your wine merchant

Von der Rebsorte bis zur richtigen Temperatur: Diese Fragen bringen euch beim nächsten Weinkauf weiter. Denn Weinfragen sind bei uns ausdrücklich erlaubt.

Many people stand in front of the shelf in a wine shop and don't quite dare to ask. Yet that is exactly what wine merchants are there for, and most of them love to talk about it. That is why our city wine walks have one rule: wine questions are explicitly welcome. Here are five questions that are always worth asking.

1. "What are you enjoying drinking right now?"

Perhaps the best question of all. Instead of asking for the "best" wine, you find out what the person in front of you is excited about. Often it is a small producer or an exciting discovery that isn't right at the front of the shelf.

2. "Which wine goes with my meal?"

Tell them what you are cooking and let them advise you. A simple rule of thumb to start with: what grows together in a region often goes well together on the plate. And light dishes usually pair with lighter wines, rich dishes with fuller ones.

3. "How warm or cold should I serve this wine?"

Temperature changes the taste more than many people think. White and sparkling wines taste best well chilled, while many red wines are better a little cooler than room temperature. A red that is too warm quickly tastes heavy and alcoholic, and a white that is too cold hides its aromas.

4. "What does 'dry' actually mean?"

A classic that often causes confusion. "Dry" means there is hardly any residual sugar left in the wine. It has nothing to do with whether a wine feels rough or furry in your mouth. That sensation usually comes from tannins, which are found mainly in red wines.

5. "Can I still age this wine?"

Not every wine gets better with age. Most wines are made to be enjoyed young and fresh. Ask whether a wine is suitable for a few years in the cellar or whether you should drink it soon.
